Recently in the Big Brother Naija House, one of the house mates, Nelson Enwerem Prince, narrated how the vehicle he was being driven in was trailed on his way to Owerri from his village. (Yeah, we are also watching the BBN show to monitor and bring you security/safety updates).
While I listened carefully to his story I was triggered when he did mention that their driver followed the same route leading to their house in Owerri and then noticed the suspected trailers parked ahead of them. In a narrow road, with some vehicles lined behind them, he stated that his driver hit rammed into the suspected trailers and manoeuvred his way to their house.
While this article is not intended to apportion blames, but we think in a situation like that the driver would have handled it differently. The decision he took was dangerous and could have been fatal.
Now, this is what they would have done and we suggest you do the same once you suspect that you are being tailed:
- Don’t drive to your house- once you notice that someone is following you please don’t drive to your house. The reason is because the trailers might have some of their members waiting for you at the entrance to your house. Or they might just be trailing you to know where you live with the intention of coming to cause you harm in your house at their comvenient time. So, don’t drive to your house.
- Drive to a police station: Once you noticed you are being trailed, drive to any nearby police station or call the police for help immediately stating your exact location. If you can locate a police check point, stop there immediate and report the situation to them.
- Maintain a safe distance between you and the car ahead. This will allow you enough space to manoeuvre your way once you notice those trailing you coming out of their car towards you.
- Mixup your driving pace: This is one of the ways to know when someone is tailing you. Increase your speed and slow down a bit. If someone is trailing you there’s every likelihood that he will do the same.
- Maintain the main roads. Don’t drive into streets or lonely roads. Except you are sure the road leads to a police station.
- Get information about the car if you can. The vehicle make and model, and the number plate will help the police find your trailers when you eventually escape them.
